THE PROJECT:
The school has 2 permanently employed care givers
who are very dedicated but lack resources such as age specific
teaching aides. The volunteer will therefore be expected to
assist in a very creative manner making use of the most basic
equipment to fulfil the daily program objectives.
-
Presently there are 25 children to the 2 teachers
and this brings capacity problems in terms of human resources.
The volunteer will be of great help here in order to run smaller
classes based on age or special needs.
-
A primary help will be obtaining financial aid.
This will allow the teachers access to material (Photostats,
paper, books, crayons etc) to use in the classroom situation.
Another area is to create a project to teach the children how to
help themselves through the environment – growing vegetables to
eat, flowers to sell etc.
-
There is also an opportunity to establish a link
with an established school in town and to use ideas,
themes etc from this school. Also to bring the schools together
by having outings to each others schools or going to the beach
together.

The
school receives no grants or funding of any sort from local or
national government (the school was built with foreign donations)–
infrastructure is therefore basic but functional, salaries low and
teacher aids minimal. A basic feeding program exists consisting of a
bowl of maze meal (porridge) and sugar.
